What motivates you to read: I have been in love with books since I could read. In the second grade my teacher Ms. Doorman ignited my love affair with books when she gave me my first Cabbage Patch Kids Books. As I began to grow older I started to want to write. In fourth grade while other kids were playing on the playground, I was working on a mystery series. Needles to say, I feel that reading, writing... anything in the literary world excites me!
What do you like best about RWA: As an author I recognize the importance of book clubs. In that I approach the book club with having knowledge from the best of both worlds. I look at what’s important for an author such as sales that count (reporting to Essence and NY Times). I also look from the perspective of the reader such as being able to meet the author and get their thoughts on why they wrote the book. I feel that RWA provides something for everyone involved and we support our community book store in the process! Hopefully we can reignite a movement in buying books from places that benefit the most and supporting authors traditionally and self published.
Who is your favorite Author: I love E. Lynn Harris, Virginia DeBerry & Donna Grant, Stanley Bennett Clay, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni and Langston Hughes.
Tell a little about yourself: I am an Essence Magazine Best Selling author of five titles, Reflections of a Woman, Gold Diggin’, Attitudes of a Woman, Keith’s Story, Bedtime Stories & Sweet Dreams . I write both fiction and poetry. I am a cultured spoken word artist who has performed from NY to L.A. I am also and actress and can be seen performing live with the dynamic theatrical group Lyric Ave (www.lyricave.com)
